Contacting the Ward on the Day of your Admission

Even although you have been given a date for admission and date of operation it is possible that due to unforeseen emergencies a bed may not be available.  If a bed is not available at the time you phone we will contact you later that morning with an update

What to bring with you

There are certain things that you may want to take to hospital with you.  These include:
  • Personal Items
  • A selection of night dresses / pyjamas
Short sleeved night dresses are best immediately following surgery because the doctors may need to be able to take blood, put up a drip and you also may need a catheter)
  • Toiletries
    • face cleanser/soap
    • face cloths/body cloth
    • shower gel
    • deodorant
    • toothbrush
    • toothpaste
    • hairbrush
    • Supply of sanitary towels & pants
  • Pair of slippers
  • Books/magazines
  • Puzzle books

  • Medications
Bring in all medications that you currently take.  These will be reviewed by the nurse and doctor and they will make sure you have them prescribed during your stay in hospital.  The nurse will lock them up in the small metal box so that they are available for your use.  Please do not keep any medications in your handbag, locker as we need to know what  you are taking in case of any interactions between medications you may be prescribed during your stay.

On discharge your own medication will be returned to you with a supply of any new medication prescribed.

  • Valuables
It is best to leave valuables at home.  You may wish small change to buy magazines, papers, sweets from the shop or the “trolley dollies”.  If you bring in valuables and choose to keep them with you-you will be asked to sign a form on your admission document-these are then your responsibility.  If you wish us to lock them in our safe box we will issue a receipt for these items which can then be returned at any time. trolly
On your arrival at the ward we will provide you with a Theatre Gown.  Any electrical equipment that you bring in that requires mains supply will need to be checked by our electrician prior to use, this can take up to a few days.

Make up and Jewellery
Please do not wear any make up as you will be asked to remove it for going to theatre.  This is to allow Anaesthetic and Recovery nurses to observe your pallor (complexion) when under anaesthetic.  Other items to be removed include:
  • false nails
  • earrings and any other body piercings
  • nail varnish
You may wear a wedding ring but we will cover it with clear tape for safety.
