In this section, there are some important things that you should know before you come to hospital. Most of these things will have been discussed with you prior to your arrival. Please click on the topic you are interested in, or alternatively, you can work your way through the whole section.
What to bring with you There are some things that you should bring with you to the hospital when you are coming into the Day Case Unit for your operation. These include:
- a dressing gown and slippers.
- a fresh sample of urine (you may get a “universal container” from your GP or alternatively use a clean small plastic bottle or container)
- Something to read
- loose clothing for going home
On your arrival at the ward we will provide you with a Theatre Gown
Fasting Fasting is when you do not eat anything. It is common for patients to have to be fasted before an operation. The duration of the fasting before an operation varies, your healthcare professional will discuss this with you. However, our current guidelines are below:
- If your operation is on a morning list you will be asked to have nothing to eat after midnight and water only until 0600 hrs
- If your operation is on an afternoon list you will be asked to have a light breakfast before 0700 hrs and only water up to 1000 hrs
- No smoking after midnight
- Please do not chew chewing gum or suck sweets
- You should take your usual medication (if necessary with a sip of water)
If you do not adhere to these fasting guidelines it may mean you operation will be delayed or postponed.
Make up and Jewellery Please do not wear any make up as you will be asked to remove it for going to theatre. This is to allow Anaesthetic and Recovery nurses to observe your pallor (complexion) when under anaesthetic. Other items to be removed include:
- false nails
- earrings and any other body piercings
- nail varnish
You may wear a wedding ring but we will cover it with clear tape for safety.
Valuables & Belongings Please leave all jewellery and valuables at home as we cannot be held responsible for any loss
