You can have a maximum of 2 people of your choice with you in labour, they are known as your ‘Birthing Partners’.
Role of the birthing partner
The main role of a birthing partner is to support and encourage you during labour.   Some of the things the birthing partner might do include:

  • back massage and foot massage
  • offering cold drinks
  • providing a cold cloth to the face and neck
  • providing encouragement to breathe through the contractions

When it is time to come to the hospital don’t forget to take with you your camera, change for the phone, cool clothing and some food as it may be a quite a long day!

It is also important that you let your workplace know that you are not available.

Partner’s Room

There is a small room on labour ward for the exclusive use of birthing partners while their partner is in labour ward only.
The partner’s room is equipped with:
  • Tea and coffee making facilities
  • A TV
  • A toilet
  • A shower

You are also able to use your mobile phone in this area.
There is no waiting room facility on the maternity ward and there is no overnight accommodation.  We advise family and friends to wait patiently at home.
