What is the Pre - Admissions Assessment Unit?

If you are due to have an operation you may be given an appointment at the Pre-Admissions Assessment Unit. The aim of the Unit is to make sure each patient’s health is as good as it can be before their operation. This reduces the number of cancellations and reduces the risk of complications occurring during your operation.

When is it open?

The pre-admissions assessment unit is open Monday to Friday from 9 o clock in the morning until 5 o clock in the evening.  You will be given an appointment time to come for a pre admissions assessment prior to your operation.

How do I get there?

It is located in the old part of the hospital.  Below is a picture of the front of the old part of the hospital where the entrance to the Pre Admissions Assessment Unit is located.

What will happen next?

A nurse will  explain exactly what to expect before, during, and after your operation. Don’t worry if you can’t remember everything- you will be given leaflets about all the important information. You will then be given time to get some lunch.

Through the course of the day, the nursing staff will take you through your "patient journey" so far  and organise pre operative investigations as appropriate.  This might include; height, weight, blood pressure, blood tests, ECG (tracing of your heart), X-rays, Pulmonary function tests (to assess your lungs) and urine analysis.  They will also discuss medications, transport arrangements (to the hospital at time of operation) and your operation and post operative care.
