10 Things to Expect
After your surgery you may not feel your best and all you want to know if when you can go home.  Here are 10 useful things to expect during your hospital experience.

1.    To be in hospital for up to 6-8 hours
2.    You may get a headache due to dehydration from fasting
3.    Do not expect to be admitted and then go directly to theatre
4.    You may feel drowsy after a general anaesthetic
5.    You may feel sick but the anaesthetist will give you a drug to overcome this.
6.    You may have some discomfort or pain and pain killers will be given if required.
7.    On return from theatre you may need up to 2 hours to recover
8.    You may have stitches covered with a dressing, these will most likely be absorbable.
9.    Any follow up arrangements will be made before discharge
10.    Advice regarding the procedure will be given on discharge


Getting picked up from hospital after your operation
Please make sure someone is available to collect you after your operation.  
If you have had a General Anaesthetic:

  • you will not be allowed to drive or take public transport
  • you must not operate machinery or sign legal documents for 24 hrs following a general anaesthetic

You must have a responsible adult stay with you for 24 hours following a general anaesthetic.

What do I do if I have any problems once I am home?
If any problems arise between the opening hours of the DCU - phone the unit.  If outside the opening times of the DCU but within 24 hours then phone the Gynaecology Ward i.e. Ward 5 for further advice 01343 576280.  If problems occur after 24 hours then contact your G.P.
