District Nurse Ally Lister is the winner of a national award from Wound UK for her Speyside Leg Club, which provides treatment, advice, and networking opportunities for people from across more than 500 square miles.

"I never thought I'd win, but I'm passionate about this work, so I entered, and won the Quality of Life Award," said Ally, who is based in Aberlour.  The weekly club, which has around 240 members, was the first of its kind in Scotland when it started in 2005 and is held in Aberlour's Masonic Hall.  Ally says bringing patients to a social setting is good for raising morale and they can discuss their progress and experiences with each other, as well as staff.

"Some have even been involved in running the club, which is good for self-esteem, which in turn can give a positive approach to their management of the leg ulcer.  Some were so confident about managing their care that during last winter, they were able to keep up the good work at home with phone support from the community nursing team."

Ally says the colleagues have benefitted too:  "The knowledge and skill level of all health professionals has increased immeasurably.  This has been evident in the quality of care and an improved referral system.  Care can be delivered in many ways and this award and the confidence of our Club members show it's always worth looking at doing things differently.  And when you're passionate about your work, why not go in for an award and share your good practice?"
