The Mobile Information Bus provides information and advice on all health and lifestyle issues to support young people of secondary school age living in rural areas to make positive lifestyle choices.

The MIB is very much a partnership venture, working with community planning partners, including community learning and development teams, Grampian Police, Access to Health (A2H) and YPAC (Young Peoples Addiction Counseling).

Facilities on the MIB include computers, music, DVDs, a confidential area, leaflets and comfortable seating.  Activities delivered on the bus are lead by the young people and facilitated by fully trained staff from a variety of backgrounds

(health and community workers).  The sessions consist of discussions and workshops on young people’s health issues (alcohol, drugs, sexual health, tobacco) accounting for 50% of activities on the bus.  Games, quizzes and health related computer games are also popular.  Young people are encouraged to express views and opinions of the service during their visit – these are taken into account when planning and implementing where and how the MIB bus operates.  Evaluation from the young and staff remains extremely positive.

A training programme is identified and provided for health staff and youth workers to support work on the MIB, including sexual health, alcohol awareness, smoking cessation, child protection training.

All activities are recorded and reports are produced for each area visited to ensure ongoing evaluation.

The MIB is primarily based within rural communities, where access to services and information is not as accessible for young people.  And also supports local campaigns and events. The Mobile Information has supported up to 3.5 thousand young people each year since its development in 2000.
