The time following childbirth can be an exciting yet exhausting one. There will be times you are filled with joy and times when you just want to cry. To help you through this time there are lots of support networks available to you both physically and electronically.
For advice and support networks in your area it is best to speak to your community midwife or health visitor to get up to date information on the organisations available. To give you an idea, these are some of the support networks available:
There is a whole world of advice available electronically via the World Wide Web. Many sites offer advice, professional support as well as peer support. Some of these organisations are listed below:
MAMA (Meet-a-Mum Association) MAMA provides friendship and support to Mothers and Mothers to be. This has the advantage that you can locate other Mums when moving to a new area or you feel you are in an isolated area. They have a helpline available for women and families with postnatal illnesses. Serene (incorporating the CRY-SIS Helpline) Cry-sis offers support for families with excessively crying, sleepless and demanding babies. The Cry-Sis answering service will give you the phone number of volunterr contacts who once had similar problems. Fathers Direct One for the Dads - the national information centre on fatherhood. They have been set up to help you harness the full potential of fatherhood with news, training information, policy updates, research summaries and guides for supporting fathers and thie families. Parenting Across Scotland A partnership of voluntary organisations who use their experience of working with thousands of parents to find ways of supporting parents and families better. They believe parents should be valued more, and that family relationships in all kinds if ‘families’ are crucial to everyone’s health, wellbeing and achievement.
